AUTORITRATTI IN BANCA

Autoritratti in banca is a handmade book created for my first bank, made up of 27 pages and containing 23 self-portraits. The project was born from a very specific and almost absurd detail: inside that bank there was a defective mirror, and every time I went there in 2016 to make some banking movement, it distorted my face in a different way. So, each visit became a kind of accidental selfie, and I turned that repetition into an artistic process.

Until then, I had never really ventured into banks. I came much more from the street, spending most of my time outside, doing graffiti, living like a street rat, far from institutional spaces and their rituals. That is also why entering the bank and confronting that environment felt strange enough to deserve transformation into art. What for others might have been a normal administrative place, for me became a stage for self-observation, deformation, and irony.

The cover of the book recalls the visual effect of that mirror and, like the mirror itself, it deforms the face of the viewer. In that sense, the object does not only document distortion, but continues to perform it. Even the back of the book carries something personal, since it comes from a pair of FUBU pants, one of my favorite streetwear pieces. So the whole work becomes a collision between identity, reflection, class, street culture, and self-image, turning an unfamiliar place like a bank into a space of artistic production and warped self-portraiture.
